What is a Trachesotomy?

A tracheostomy is performed when an adult or child has a condition that makes normal breathing difficult or impossible. A small surgical opening is made through the front of the neck into the windpipe, or trachea and a tracheostomy tube is placed through the hole allowing air to flow in and out of the windpipe.
