Respiratory Muscle Strength Clinical Training Workshop
Presented by Christine Sapienza, Ph.D, CCC - SLP
Description
This webinar has been scheduled to accommodate SLP’s in Australia and NZ. This presentation will cover the basic principles and clinical utility of Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST). It will include information on its theoretical underpinnings, report on outcome data, and present treatment approaches for patient groups using both inspiratory and expiratory training devices. Dr. Sapienza brings pragmatic information that is informative and interesting to clinicians worldwide. Conventional means of addressing respiratory swallow and cough impairment will be reviewed prior to an in-depth review of emerging research supporting respiratory muscle strength training procedures in patient groups.   Benefits, limitations, clinical trial designs, and clinical applications of strength training paradigms will also be presented.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify key anatomical and physiologic components of respiratory, swallow and cough, determining the effectiveness of RMST for patient care
  • Identify which patient populations respiratory muscle strength is considered effective
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess key measures of respiratory muscle strength and describe how these measures relate to the development of respiratory muscle strength training protocols
  • Demonstrate knowledge of available devices for respiratory muscle strength training and describe advantages & disadvantages of each, as well as applicability to specific patient groups
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and implement respiratory muscle strength training protocols for patients
  • Assess respiratory muscle strength training outcomes in terms of measures of respiratory muscle strength, swallow and cough
